User accessible toilets play a vital role in improving the lives of thousands of people throughout the UK by allowing them the freedom to venture beyond their own doorstep safe in the knowledge that they can access toilet facilities. For some people though standard accessible toilets are not suitable, particularly those with profound and multiple learning disabilities, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and other similar degenerative diseases.
Changing Places is helping to change that by allowing these users and their carers the ability to use the toilet in safety and comfort given by more space and the correct equipment, including height adjustable adult-sized changing bench, a tracking hoist system or mobile hoist, adequate space in the changing area for the disabled person and up to two carers, a centrally placed toilet, accessible washing facilities and correctly mounted hand dryers. All of these facilities provide a safe, hygienic environment for those in need to use the toilet.
Changing Places hope to install over 1000 registered changing places toilets so that many people are no longer confined to their homes and many more businesses can open their doors to thousands of new customers. These changes allow us to have a more inclusive society and build bridges with people who have profound and multiple disabilities. You can help make this happen by supporting Changing Places in a number of ways. Their website can be found at www.changing-places.org.
